Origins of STLI
In 1989, the Institute for Information Industry (III) established the “Information Law Research Task Force” within its Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute (MIC) to help Taiwan’s IT industry keep pace with global trends and increase its international competitiveness by creating a sound and comprehensive legal and regulatory environment. The creation of such an environment was aimed at stimulating the growth of Taiwan’s high-tech industries.
In 1996, with support from the Technology Development Program (TDP) run by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the status of the task force was elevated and it became an independent unit under the III, with the name Science & Technology Law Center (STLC) and then Science & Technology Law Institute (STLI) since 2011.
Our Mission
Ever since its establishment, the STLI has been a think tank devoted to the development of science and technology laws and policies and has promoted general industry-wide legal systems. Besides serving as the legal consultant for III, the STLI has used its professional legal expertise to provide practical solutions for the Taiwanese government’s efforts to create a strong legal and regulatory environment for the development of science and technology industries and other emerging industries, and enable these industries to cope with significant challenges emerging from the development of information, technology and globalization. The goal of these efforts has been to enable Taiwan’s industries to keep up with international trends and expand global development.
Based on its strengths in policy and legal research, the STLI aims to continue to expand the scope of its international exchanges and cooperation. The STLI pledges that it will not only become a hub of technology and law, but also an authoritative research institute that promotes linkages between Taiwan and the global arena.
